What Is THCP?

THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is a phytocannabinoid found naturally in hemp, identified by an Italian research team in 2019. What separates it from ordinary THC is its molecular structure: a seven-carbon alkyl side chain instead of the five carbons found in Delta-9 THC.

That longer chain changes how it binds. Laboratory studies measured THCP binding to CB1 receptors roughly 33 times more readily than Delta-9 THC. Binding affinity is not the same as felt intensity, but it is why even small amounts of THCP register clearly in a blend.

Because it occurs in trace amounts — typically under 1% of the plant — THCP in commercial products is concentrated and almost always blended with other cannabinoids rather than used alone.

How to Use THCP Products

Start smaller than you think. One or two short draws from a vape, or half a gummy. THCP blends are stronger than the Delta-8 or Delta-9 products most people are used to.
